The greatest failure is failure to try. When I came to London I had a plan to record conversations with managers of different store managers. To know their perspectives about fashion in London, what is prevailing, what makes London different from other countries it being one of the fashion capitals, and similar kind.
I first went to the stores in Oxford Street, had a talk with the store manager in few stores but they all denied, some said to email and get appointment at the first place, and some said that the manager is not available for a month. But then I went to Selfridges. It is a mall which has most of the luxury and high end brands.
I went to a few Luxury brands and was awestruck seeing their collection. I went to Hermès which is known for its scarves and leather products. Then to Bulgari that specialises in Italian jewellery and watches. Chanel’s store had variety of Jewellery, accessories and fragrances. Then to Chopard which is famous for it’s ladies watches. All of these brands had mind-blowing collection. Meanwhile this window shopping I forgot my purpose for going in there.
So after being all nervous I made my first try there in Topshop. They were very supportive and helped me record my first video. I had a set of 5-6 questions that i had asked the manager recorded it during our conversation. That boosted up my confidence to try other stores as well. But all the other brands and the people representing the brands denied because they didn’t want to get in trouble by recording a video in their work place. I even tried talking to the customer service of Selfridges regarding the same. After trying few more, I had to give up on the recording thing for the day and start window shopping again.
I went to Gucci, Dior, and YSL after that and fell completely in love with their bags. There were several other brands like Marc Jacobs, Zegna, Micheal Kors, Louis Vitton, name it and it was in there.
Work for it more than you hope for it. It doesn’t matter how slowly you go as long as you don’t stop.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
